The mother hurriedly exits as she instructs Loreena to set up the croquet set and Alice to set up the tea set. Out of sight from Alice, Loreena and the Mother - characters from Wonderland – the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, and Wonderland Flowers – quickly pop up and disappear, illustrating the “missing pictures” that Lorena describes as she reads aloud. Alice’s older sister, Loreena, is reading a book to Alice, but much to Alice’s disappointment, it is a “book with no pictures.” As Loreena reads aloud a few sentences from the book, a hint of what’s to come is revealed to the audience. These images can then be saved onto the viewing device and be used as background wallpaper.As the play opens in an English parlor, Alice’s mother is busily preparing for a party later that day – which, as she reminds Alice, is “just for grown-ups.” Alice is impatient, wanting to experience and be a part of everything in a “grown-up” world. Locating the symbols and pressing them correctly will result in unlocking preview screenshots and concept art for Madness Returns. There were several astronomical symbols hidden throughout the Storybook. To progress through the story, the viewer must interact with the illustrations by pressing buttons, moving objects around the screen, or reading The Illustrated London News newspaper articles. As well as covering the events that happened during American McGee's Alice in Wonderland, it also showed what happened to Alice in the asylum. The Storybook was a prequel to Madness Returns, covering the ten-year period that Alice Liddell was treated in Rutledge Asylum, finishing around the time of her release and move to Houndsditch Home for Wayward Youth.
